Case Study: Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3

We went behind the scenes at DNEG to break down the creative process in Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3 and take a deep dive into Clarisse’s critical role in this award-winning  episodic TV production. Senior and Lead Lighting Technical Director, Eric Schultz, discusses how Clarisse assisted in overcoming the various challenges the team faced by providing high-speed modifications and simplifying complex scene creations for large scale environments. Clarisse contributed to the season’s lighting, set-dressing, lookdev, and rendering workflow. Schultz describes Clarisse as “instrumental” in terms of rendering, being that it saved the studio massive amounts of time. He also describes the experience of using Clarisse on episodic work as “seamless”, making it a key tool in this type of production where “turnaround time is pretty quick compared to film.” With the help of Clarisse, Star Trek: Discovery won the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Visual Effects In A Single Episode’ in Season 3, Episode 11 - "Su'kal". Congratulations to DNEG and the Star Trek: Discovery VFX team! Hear what Eric had to say about Clarisse and watch our ‘Behind The Scenes Star Trek: Discovery (Season 3)’ here
